THE COWBOY WAY
Silhouette Special Edition
January 2005

Single mother, Beth Conroy, learns that her son Kevin won a week at the Gold Buckle Ranch where he'll be participating in their Wheelchair Rodeo program. Kevin's hero, bull riding champion Jake Dixon, is the man who started the program which gives children in wheelchairs the opportunity to rope and ride and be real cowboys/girls for a week. Jake was a hero to Kevin at a time when he needed one the most, so they pack up and fly to Wyoming.

When Beth and Kevin arrive at the Gold Buckle Ranch, Beth is immediately wary of Jake and his drinking. Beth's late husband was an alcoholic. It was he who drove drunk and crashed into a bridge with Kevin in the car. He died, and Kevin is relegated to a wheelchair, even after several operations. Jake thinks that Beth is too overprotective of Kevin. Beth thinks that Jake ought to stick to what he knows best: riding bulls and running Wheelchair Rodeo. As they get to know one another, Beth discovers that Jake has serious medical problems. If he rides again, he could be permanently injured. When she falls in love with him, she knows it will never work. She can't deal with another person who she loves confined in a wheelchair, especially when he can prevent it. Jake can't give up riding, it's his whole identity, and he's riding for a different goal this time: someone put up a million dollars. Jakes wants the money for Wheelchair Rodeo.

Together they discover that if they both give a little, love will find a way.
